What are the typical Alsatian dishes and desserts you absolutely must try?

Choucroute garnie

The emblematic dish of Alsace! Fermented cabbage (sauerkraut) simmered with white wine and garnished with various meats: sausages, smoked bacon, ham hock… All accompanied by potatoes. Perfect with a Riesling!

Baeckeoffe

A stew made with potatoes, onions, and three meats (pork, beef, lamb), marinated in white wine with herbs, then slowly cooked in a terracotta terrine.

Wine pairing with a Sylvaner.

Flammekueche (Tarte flambée)

A thin bread dough filled with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon, quickly baked in a wood-fired oven. It comes in several versions: gratin (with cheese), forestière (with mushrooms).

As an aperitif with Crémant or Pinot Gris!

Fleischschnacka

Noodle rolls stuffed with minced meat and cooked in broth, a rustic and comforting Alsatian specialty!

Recommended with Pinot Noir.

Spätzle

Small Alsatian pasta made with flour, eggs, and water, often served with sauces or simply pan-fried with butter and cheese.

Try them with a good Pinot Blanc.

Kougelhopf

A light, crown-shaped brioche, flavored with rum or kirsch, and garnished with raisins and almonds. Its soft texture and slightly buttery taste make it a classic Alsatian breakfast. Often also enjoyed as an aperitif with a Gewurztraminer!

Bredele

Small traditional cookies made during the Christmas holidays. There are a multitude of varieties: cinnamon, almond, butter, star-shaped, or heart-shaped…

To be enjoyed with a Pinot Gris.

Tarte aux quetsches

A delicious Alsatian plum tart (quetsches), often slightly tart and topped with a little sugar or a flan mixture for an extra treat.

Perfect wine pairing: Pinot Gris!

Forêt-Noire

Although its origin is debated between Alsace and neighboring Germany, this iconic cake is made with chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream, sour cherries macerated in kirsch, and chocolate shavings.

Even with Pinot Noir, it’s a real treat!

Männele

A small brioche in the shape of a snowman, flavored with orange blossom or vanilla, traditionally eaten on Saint Nicholas Day (December 6).
